Allotments a Growing Need

Cllr Mike Crowe has confirmed this week that progress is been made on the establishment of allotments around Galway City.

“Over the last number of months many people have approached me regarding the provision of allotments across the city. It was one issue that kept raising its head during my canvass for the election. I gave a commitment to anyone that spoke to me that if re-elected I would try and work with the Council and start to provide sites for this sole purpose”

“Historically, we rightfully have provided sites for all other sorts of amenity and recreational facilities. We were never really big on allotments in Galway City and that needs to change. People now want allotments and I believe that we as a local authority have a requirement to meet this growing need”

“I have had a number of meetings with the Director Of Services for the Environment over the last number of weeks and a number of potential sites have been identified.
We now need to work through those sites, examine each one individually and finalise a number of them for allotments”

“This will take a few weeks but I will continue to have regular meetings with the Officials on this and try and have this sorted by September” concluded Crowe
