Banks policy costing 100s of jobs weekly in Galway
Councillor has accused the nations banks of costing 100s of jobs across the city and county on a weekly basis. Cllr Mike Crowe has said that business people are been put under enormous pressure by banks that are calling in loans and overdrafts.
“The fact of the matter is that business people are been squeezed by banks daily. The banks are giving no flexibility on overdrafts and if a person goes over the agreed limit then they get a phone call and are told to lodge that amount or the item will be returned unpaid.
It’s absolutely criminal what these banks are putting people through. I know of many business people in Galway that this is happening to. It cannot and should not continue”
“The banks must be told that business people, after all that’s what it is about, its about people, about jobs about lives, must give some flexibility. In the past there was sur-charge interest added to your account and you paid it and that was that. Nowadays they are not entertaing this, the branches are under strict instructions not to let customers breach limits. Put simply its costing jobs and hundreds of them across Galway. Businesses are letting people go as a direct result of banks pressure, and no one is acknowleging this.”
“If the tax payer is about to give billions to the banks then a number of things must happen. Firstly they must take pressure off business, secondly they have to be sympathetic towards people who are having difficulty paying their mortgage and thirdly they pay must be capped.”
