Christmas pets must not be abandoned as welfare groups get cash boost
Pets given as gifts this Christmas must not be abandoned when the festive season is over.
That’s according to Galway City Councillor, Michael Crowe, who was announcing funding to the tune of €25,000 for Galway SPCA. ‘This is welcome funding for the Galway SPCA as the months after Christmas are sadly the busiest time for animal welfare organizations,” said Councillor Crowe. ‘Pets given at Christmas grow up quickly, needing more food and attention or a trip to the vet. All of this can take time and money and the novelty of owning a pet can wear off for children.
‘Every year, pets are abandoned in dust bins or left to fend for themselves on the streets. That’s no way to treat animals and I would appeal to people to look after their pets this Christmas.
‘I would like to pay tribute to all involved in the Galway SPCA and, in particular, to the efforts and sacrifices they make in circumstances that are often difficult. ‘I am well aware of the increasing demands on their services and I hope that the financial assistance will be of help to each of them in sustaining their efforts through the coming year. “I hope the support of the general public will continue and maintain their operations at effective levels,’ said Councillor Crowe.
