Fianna Fáil councillors secure national swim championships for Leisureland complex

Fianna Fail Councillors Peter Keane and Michael J Crowe are confident that early planning coupled with the correct mindset of the various stakeholders including Galway City Council can result in a successful bid to attract the National Short Course Swim Championships to the Leisureland Complex in November 2010.

Both City Councillors who are also members of the Leisureland Board have been working diligently over the last number of weeks in their efforts to attract the National Swimming short Course Championships to Salthill next November.

Commenting on the matter Deputy Mayor Cllr. Keane said “in these very challenging economic times there is added responsibility on Local Elected Representatives to do all they can to attract as much investment to the locality as possible and we will not be found wanting in this regard”. Cllr. Keane further added that “the prospect of a return of International Class Swimmers to Salthill and competing in Leisureland is very exciting”

The event is being organised in conjunction with Swim Ireland whom it is understood are favouring the Salthill Venue over competing venues due to the Pool configuration (25m), the adjacent availability of first class accommodation together with all that Salthill has to offer by way of Restaurants and Public Amenities which are sure to compliment the event.

The event is expected to attract the very best in National and International Swimmers who will be vying to record world class times in advance of the European and World Short Course Swim Championships to be held in 2011 and with the London Olympics in 2012 the event is expected to attract world class competitors. In welcoming the prospect of the staging the event Cllr. Crowe commented “We are committed to bringing this event to Salthill in November which will attract 500 competitors along with an influx of an expected 3,000 people to Salthill for the weekend of the event will give a much needed boast to the Local Economy”. Cllr Crowe further added “ We have proven through the Salthill Airshow and the Volvo Ocean Race that we are capable of hosting major international events and this will be no different”.

Both Councillors have also met with Mr Dan Murphy, General Manager of the Galway Bay Hotel in order to try and secure very competitive rates for visitors on this particular weekend. Commenting after the meeting Mr. Murphy stated “It was a very fruitful meeting and of course it goes without saying that we here in the Galway bay Hotel will do all we can to accommodate the visitors on this weekend. I am delighted that both Councillors have delivered this major sporting event for Galway City”

A formal decision on the event is expected in the next fortnight
