Transport & infrastructure on course for Volvo
Chairperson of Galway City’s Transport Committee Cllr Mike Crowe has this week stated that the works that need to be done across the City in time for the Volvo Ocean Race are well on course.
“We have put a large programme in place across the City to upgrade it in order for Galway to look its best during the festival. As Chair of the Transport Committee we have had an enormous amount of work to progress and it was important that it be done on time.”
“ Among the issues we have been progressing and trying to ensure are done include the following
the provision of a park and ride service from the race course with a 5 minute turn around
to agree with schools on the west side to allow the public to park there
the upgrading of Rosemary Avenue to limestone kerbing
the installation of a traffic table to facilitate pedestrian crossing at Eyre St/Bothar Irwin
the upgrading of footpaths in the City Centre
the completion of the Bus Lane Outbound on Dublin Road
the Moneenageisha Roundabout with a traffic signalised junction
the installation of 35 City Centre information signs in the City
the provision of temporary bicycle stands
All of this work is under way and some of it complete. Some of these works are causing difficulty and hold ups in spots but it will be worth it. And while the Volvo Ocean Race is only for two weeks in June this positive work will obviously remain.”
“Galway City Council have worked hard over the last year planning for this and we are almost complete. The event will be of huge benefit to Galway and will give us an opportunity to show case our City.”
“I have another meeting of the committee organised for next week to finalise the last few items and am confident that all the required works will be completed well in advance of June”
